Abstract

Nanotechnology provides an effective means to liberate and distribute pesticides in a controlled manner with high specificity, since it allows them to be released in a controlled manner. The pesticide supply is based on polymers with nanoscale dimensions that have greater stability in formulation, capacity for slow release of active ingredients and greater activity; this activity search to incorporate bioactive molecules in plastic foil to develop plastic padding a posteriori, that protect crop and release these molecules to repel pests. The repellency effect of polymeric nanoparticles loaded with 1, 3 and 5% of three essential oils, basil Ocimum basilicum, cinnamon Cinnamomum verum and citronella Pelargonium sp., essential oil was incorporated in plastic foil for mulching on Bactericera cockerelli in tomato Solanum lycopersicum cv. Rio Grande through free Choice and non-Choice bioassays in laboratory and greenhouse respectively. Arrival and oviposition were recorded,
and repellency index was obtained. It was evaluated with analysis of variance and LSD means test. Plastic foil is generally effective in repelling B. cockerelli adults. The integration of three concentrations of nanoparticles loaded with basil essential oil repelled B. cockerelli adults. Basil and cinnamon essential oils nanoparticles loaded in plastic foil are very promising for their development and integration in field tests for B. cockerelli control, while the integration of citronella essential oil nanoparticles loaded in plastic foil was not very effective. Nanotechnology is an alternative with potential for insect control, for this reason, it is important to continue with more studies with different biomolecules and diversity of pests under laboratory and field condition are needed.
